چکیده

Background: Echinococcus granuiosus is a parasite causing hydatidosis, an infection characterised by a prolonged course attributed to some form of immunosuppression. Recent findings have increased our knowledge concerning the parasite-evading mechanisms, making more rational future therapeutic intervention. Methodology: The literature was reviewed using MEDLINE search for immunology of hydatidosis. Results: Accumulating data from animal experiments and patient studies show clear evidence of immunomodulation affecting all parts of immunity. The most recent and important finding relating to improved parasite survival is the induction of a cytokine-related Th2 response, leading susceptibility to hydatid disease. Th1 response may co-exist and relates with protective immunity. Conclusion: The complete investigation of immunopathology may help management, improving the efficacy of the conventional therapeutic measures.

Human Cystic Echinococcosis: Old Problems and New Perspectives

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a widespread chronic endemic helminthic disease caused by infection with metacestodes of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. CE affects humans and has a worldwide prevalence of approximately six million. In this review, we discuss current findings in diagnosis and clinical management of CE and new concepts relating to E. granulosus molecules that directly modulat...

Rare presentation of multi-organ abdominal echinococcosis: report of a case and review of literature.

Hydatid disease, which is also known as cystic echinococcosis, is a zoonotic infection caused by the cestode tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus and rarely by Echinococcus multilocularis. In this report we describe an unusual case of a 19-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital for abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Computed tomography revealed multi-organ abdominal echinococcosis. The ...

An unusual presentation of hydatid cyst in anterior abdominal wall.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation caused by the larval form of the cestode worm Echinococcus. The most commonly encountered form of the disease is visceral hydatid cyst caused by Echinococcus granulosus or dog tapeworm. Muscular involvement has been reported in only 3-4% cases. We are reporting this case because of its rarity, difficulty to diagnose clinically, dramatic response to med...

Echinococcus granulosus: Cure for Cancer Revisited

Whereas a number of parasites are well recognized risk factors for a number of different cancers in mammalian hosts, there is limited information on the ability of parasitic organisms to induce anticancer effects. There are conflicting reports that echinococcosis, caused by the canine tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, can decrease or increase cancer risk. This review considers both indirect ant...

The diagnosis of Echinococcus granulosus in dogs.

The problem of diagnosing Echinococcus granulosus in dogs has still only been partially resolved, even after the advent of biotechnology. The eggs of taeniid Cestoda are extremely similar, and thus identification by microscopic examination of the faeces is risky and non-specific. For this reason, Echinococcus granulosus was traditionally diagnosed in dogs ante mortem after an arecoline hydrobro...
